Racial No-No’s for NYC Rental Apartments!
Yesterday I received a phone call from a client who wanted my help to rent out some of the rental units she had coming up. Sounds great…but–here comes the catch. She didn’t want any Latinos, Indians, or Blacks. I understand that people do have their prejudices but I was a bit taken a back how blatant she was. Ironically enough, she knew that these were violations of the Fair Housing acts and added that this was the thing she didn’t like about dealing with real estate professionals because we uphold this code of ethics, but understood why we do so; but she just didn’t like it.
Red flags went up everywhere. I felt like this Manhattan real estate broker was perhaps being tested by the fair housing police.
On the flip side, it was good to hear that brokers were adhering to the Fair Housing Act which prohibits the discrimination on the basis of race, color, creed and national origin.
At any rate, I ended up passing her off to a colleague of mine who works the Jackson Heights area in Queens, since I only specialize in sales and rental apartments in Manhattan. But– I am curious what my colleague’s reaction will be to this lady’s protestations on the type of prospective tenants she should and shouldn’t bring.
The best part was, she asked what race the other broker was that I was recommending her to and if she was black! She obviously knew I was “Oriental” from her research efforts. I wanted to correct her and say I was Asian…not Oriental.
